Default Cooling Problem

Completed a road trip today from Reno to San Diego. When I got to a hot area upper 90s/low 100s the temp gage stayed up around 2/3-3/4. Photo of dash here: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...eat=directlink

After getting down to cooler temps around San Diego the temp gage settled down to normal.

Own three other G1s and this is first time I have encountered this issue. Usally the temp gage stays between 1/3-1/2 even at the hottest times.

There does not appear to be any coolant leaks. Coolant reservoir had the be filled once during this trip.

I'm thinking I need to get a coolant flush and thermostat replacement.

What you all think.

Hmmm... hot areas; upper 90's/low 100's - Imperial valley on I-8

...anyways, back to your query; YES I'd agree on the cooling system service - restricted flow perhaps!

Yeah I agree with your statement about the thermostat. If you're not sure if it's an OEM thermostat and not sure when it was changed last, that would be an easy fix. Got to love how easy the thermostat is to get to on these cars.

Follow that with fresh coolant and if your radiator is healthy, I bet your problem be resolved.

Sounds like all it needs to me. If you aren't getting sufficient cooling at 70mph coolant isn't circulating properly (thermostat has my vote too).

I highly doubt that coolant contributed James; hell, I've used ONLY Prestone in mine and never ran into any cooling issue(s)... but then again, I overkill on ALL my PM's

Because I'm travelling with my spouse celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, I took the car to a local San Diego repair shop. Their diagnosis is a leaking, faulty radiator. Will let everyone know when it is repaired if that was the problem.

Damn. Have a perfectly good used radiator at home ! Oh well, can't win them all...

That sucks. Did you notice any leaks on the radiator? Usually when it seeps, the coolant dries up at the area where it's coming from.
