Re-energizing this thread, as this is good info and same issue just happened to me. With the age of our cars, this plastic rubber stopper thing is going to deteriorate and fail eventually. Good news is that these are readily available and are inexpensive. Part number 46505-SA5-000 for the stop pad. When it fails, the brake lights will be on permanently, even with the key off. So might want to pre-emptively replace this part if there are doubts about its condition.

Several of us keep a spare one in the car. Also in a pinch you can use the door panel clips (well the ones on G2s as I haven't pulled off a G1 door panel ) in a bind as it will temporarily work. Those door panel clips however will crunch/squash in time and may no longer remain effective. I recommend keeping spares of the part # listed above. Those rubber stoppers are also essential for the cruise control for manual transmission cars as well.

Interesting that you mentioned cruise control. That was the first indication that something was wrong: cruise control wouldn't engage. When I got out of the car later, I noticed that the brake lights were on. MacGyver says "nickel and a piece of used chewing gum or door clip". LOL
