Default Bandoni's 90 Mazda Miata Build (56k not a good Idea)

Last year my sister wanted a cheap convertible sports car, so after awhile of looking at all sorts of convertibles of all shapes and sizes (infinti M30, vw cabrio :vomit: etc) she had me go look at a Miata at this dealership in the valley. I was a little apprehensive at first because well lets face it these cars look kinda gay. But 1 minute behind the wheel and all of that was forgotten. thing rides like its on rails!! So after she bought hers I thought I would jump on the bandwagon and find one for myself. I trolled through cragslist looking for just the right one that needs work as this was going to be my project car. I eventually found one in Superior, AZ that was sitting outside left to rot away in the central AZ sun. On first inspection it looked just right rough around the edges no rust, 245k miles, expensive Robbins top ($600 top) and a cold air intake. So I bought it from the guy (who had a bs story a mile long about how the engine was rebuilt at 180k miles but later confirmed that was a lie)

when I brought it home I started going through the receipts from the previous owner, I googled his name, and emailed him. Turns out the previous owner is a Mr. Ed Chabot who is the president of the saguaro Miata club. Ed owned my Miata from 120k miles to about 240K miles when he traded it in for his 2006 Mazda Mx5. We met up for lunch and he was very happy to be reunited with his old car. Now I originally wanted to drop a ford 302 in this ( which I am still going to do to a different miata) but after meeting Ed and talking to him I just couldn't bring myself to change this car in such a way. Imagine buying Tyson's coupe and throwing a whole bunch of rice stuff on it, that's how it would have felt to me. People who are members of the club come up to me and say "I know this car!" or " I remember this car!"

so here are the pics and my progress so far!

this is the photo from the cl ad.

this is when I brought it home.

all the manuals and sale sticker.

here is the key handoff pic with Ed (we just pretend like that guy I bought it from doesn't exist!)

These are some pics that Ed sent me via email.

here is the damage to the $600 canvas top due to the car sitting outside uncovered for 8 months.

Being out in the az sun for 20 years the sun effects everything, and as you can see here the gauge cluster had uv damage really bad!

after using some headlight restore it was good as new.

I then took out the old sony unit and installed this pioneer deck and installed pioneer speakers as well.

Nice, got any pink wheels or rainbow decals planned

On an only semi-related note, LS1 > 302

Edit: Ah, still pics coming up ... excellent job on that cluster!

A little after I bought it I noticed that I was losing a quart of oil every 500 miles or so and I was noticing oil soot deposits out of the tail pipe. After having a couple of people following behind me I found out that the motor smokes like Krakatoa. So I sourced this 1.8L motor to replace the tired 1.6L I am also swapping out the 5 speed as well just because my current one is worn.

here is the Miata that I pulled all the motor, trans and brakes off of. It only had 116K miles and was rearended.

I am also swapping out the brakes in favor of the 1.8L brakes which are a bit bigger.

Here Is how it sits at the moment with new OEM floor mats (x-mas present from my sister) new top, Nardi torino wood grain shifter, and nicer looking steering wheel.

I hope to have the motor in by the end of next month. I still need to buy a conversion kit to make the 1.8 work in my 90 it's only $200 bucks. but I need to wait till next month, my wife's g1 powersteering line kind of ate into the Miata project fund

Miata's are fun! Is there a Miata circuit in your area? My friend in college was in a circuit specifically for Miatas and they'd haul ass in the X.
