Question What tools needed to pull a junkyard engine?

Interested in the responses I get to this one.....

Scenario is this: I'm contemplating replacing the engine my sedan needs, now that the paperwork has been straightened out, but my free time this weekend is practically non-existant, and the salvage yard I'm gonna hit will close about two hours after I get there.

So- y'all throw out the least amount of tools minimum required, to pull an engine out of a junkyard car. I plan on yanking the trans of course attached, but since I've never done this before: what do I need, what should I think of or look out for? Coolant hoses, easy, fuel lines, where? Exhaust, how? Wiring harness snip snip or...?

Remember, I've got about two hours to yank this engine and seperate the trans, and don't want to try to lug a ton of tools in. Whatchy'all think?

oh you're a G1.

you'd want basically any tools you'd use to pull a motor at home, typically at a junkyard, u'd want to just drop the motor ont he undercarrage and then take the motor/trans off from that.

u can probably get away with cutting harneses (unless u need some for your swap) along with vacuum lines and etc hoses. makes it quiker and easier

i dont think you could do it in 2 hours. it took me and 2 friends who knew what we were doing about 2.5 hours to just pull a trans. if we had air tools, that would have cut off about 30-45 minutes.

fastest ive pulled an engine was probably 2 hours out of our race car. 4 people, no air tools. of course, all the extra junk was gone, which made it go by easy quick.

that being said, you're gonna need a bunch of tool. sockets and wrenches ranging from 8mm to a 32mm socket for the axle, if you pull the trans as well. you will also need pry bars, screw drivers, and a knife, if you want to speed it up a bit.

Will they not pull it for you? Even a pick and pull will do a motor if the price is right. Time is money in your case.

10mm and a phillips oughta do it.

In all seriousness though you'll need and assortment of sockets (8mm-22mm and whatever size for the axles 32mm I think)...3/8, 1/2, and 3/4 ratchets and breaker bars, if you plan on pulling flywheel/flex plate bolts you'll need a specific 12-point 17mm socket, maybe a knife to just cut stubborn hoses off, and of course an engine hoist (although most yards will have this for rent).

Plan on bringing a friend and setting aside at least 3 hours.

Alp- that was gonna be my approach, I hope the front subframe can come down and they don't have it blocked up by it. I don't need anything other than the engine, so unfortunately, I think there might be some "casualties" surrounding this pull, if you know what I mean......

Tuba- thanks for the list, I'll pack accordingly. I think, given my situation, I can do it, again, I don't need anything other than this engine "long block", I'll be able to take my time sunday pulling mine and re-installing this one, but for the sake of just a quick "snatch-n-grab", I think I can cut/bend/beat my way to a quick engine on ground. If I could bring a "victor" wrench, we'd really be having fun, but yard rules say no.....

Holy- this particular yard won't, but for a $150 engine with a 30 day warranty, I'm not expecting them to, either, honestly.

Sam- very funny,

Thanks guys, keep it coming,

What they said. I'd say cut the heater hoses, radiator hoses, power steering hose, vacuum, electrical wires, and fuel line too to get the motor out quick. Then unbolt The y-pipe from the exhaust, both front and back engine mounts, damper, and on the side of the timing cover. If you loosen up the upper control arm and the struts, you don't need to take the nut off of the axle. It'll slide off if you got the upper control arm loose.

In a wrecking yard the easiest way might be to disconnect the lower control arms at the inside and pull the drive shafts out and take them out complete with the knuckle assemblies. Also the radius rods need to come out. The front mount and trans mount need to be disconnected. The exhaust needs to be removed and gotten out of the way. Then connect a hoist to the engine and transmission and unbolt the cross members and lower the powertrain down. Various wiring hoses etc can be cut to disconnect it from the car. With the powertrain on the ground it should be fairly easy to separate the engine and transmission. Then I would reconnect the chain hoist to the engine and lift it up out of the engine compartment. This will take a complete set of sockets and drive tools. A battery powered reciprocating saw would be helpful for cutting things.

I would predict it will take more than two hours!

i've never pulled a Legend engine but you should probably set aside about 3 hours it took maybe an hour to pull my trans, but almost three to get it back in.
