Default Part Out or Sell ?

My daughter was recently involved in a rear end (not her fault) with her '89 G1 with 153K on the odometer. I elected to get a salvage title.

Within the past year this car has received a new ignition switch, belts, alternator, and rear brakes. It still drives outstanding. In fact, just drove it myself from Las Vegas to my home in Reno - 500 miles and no problems.

The seats are still in good shape along with the rest of the interior. The only thing that doesn't work is the radio and antenna. I am the 2d owner.

My dilemma. Part out or sell. I am leaning towards selling. Someone that has a friend in the body shop business could easily pull back the rear end damage.

Photo of the car are at the following link: http://picasaweb.google.com/MIL2CIV/G1?feat=directlink

Your thoughts? Part out or sell ?

Welcome. The way I see it, these cars are pretty much done for when they get rearended. The whole back of the car jams into the passenger compartment, and basically tweaks everything behind the b-pillar. The car will never be perfect again, but I say as long as the doors open, and you can straighten it out enough to get the trunk closed, and nothing leaks, the car would be fine to drive like it is. It would make more sense to part it out however, but it's all up to you.

Yes, love to keep it but believe it or not I own 4 other G1 sedans:

I have an 89L,

my wife a 90LS,

my high school son another 90LS, and

my daughter found her an 88 to replace this damaged one.

YEP, I LOVE G1s !!!

Also, very lucky to get them all with <100k on them. Currently have 85K on mine, 114K on my wifes, 123K on my sons and 65K on my daughters.

Hey Ray good to see you!!

Yeah that's always a tough decision. Truth be told you'll probably get much more cash from a part out rather than just selling her outright...

Either way good luck!

Dawson - yes, I have been thinking of replacing my current car spare tires with the full sized ones from this damaged one. What do you think?

Just jumped over to this forum today. Have been on acura-legend.com for years but that one seems to have lost traffic the past year. Glad I found you guys on this one.

The only problem with replacing the compact spare with a full size, is the trunk bulges up. The 86-87 have a deeper spare tire well, and can fit the full size tire under the mat just fine, but the 88-90s are more shallow, and cause the whole trunk floor to lift up a little, and the carpet doesn't fit right.

I wouldn't worry too much about the compact spare tire, as it is a 15" wheel, and is the same height as the stock tire, just skinnier. For a temporary tire, they are fine.

With that said, I did carry around one of my stock wheels after putting my BBS's on the 90, and one night when my tire blew, out in the country, 30 miles from anything, at 3am, it was nice to have the full size tire to throw on and continue to drive 70mph to my destination.
