So, I've made some car waxes. Just doing a little testing.

So, I've been doing some research lately on car waxes, their composition and the production processes on them. I decided to try my hand at making some myself...

I've had a passion for detailing my entire life but when I bought the RL, with it's Nighthawk Black Pearl paint, I realized I have to really take care of this car. It needs to be washed and waxed... unlike my white Legend. As we all know, black cars can be really fussy... I think the new ownership experience with this car just may have re-ignited my detailing passion that burned out a few years ago once my white legend started to really fall by the wayside and washing and waxing no longer seemed important to me.

Alright, so as I said before, I starting making waxes. Just playing around really. I'm hoping if I can perfect my recipes to sell them and make a job out of it if they really are good. I'm at kind of a crossroads in my life, so maybe I can make a business out of this? This all started a few months ago when I started doing research about car care products. Only, then I was looking into leather conditioners... on that subject I have made a pretty good leather conditioner but it needs work!

I learned how to make a good car wax but I would like to perfect it before I try and sell anything.

Ok, enough rambling, so onto the photos....



On the left side of the hood I've applied one of my test samples. The car is freshly washed, on the right side of the hood there is some month old meguiars tech wax that has mostly worn off at this point.

You can clearly see the extra depth and clarity and on the left side. The reflections are more pronounced. It's ability to hide the scratches seems to be pretty good too...


















Now keep in mind this is a terrible camera and my paint is not properly prepped and is quite swirl marked. I will have to invest in a good camera and prep my paint good if I want to go into business. The wax really has a great visual appeal in person. I'm pleased with the results.

It does look amazing, and it looks like your custom wax outperformed Meguiars. What is the cost compared to buying products from the major companies? Probably quiet cause theres not much to say, your pics speak 5000 words. Ill buy your wax but by then i hope to be Plastdipped in pewter gray titanium over white😄👍.

Thanks! I have been testing my waxes against megs tech, megs carnauba cleaner wax, some kind of Zep Carnauba, and of course the industry standard of mediocrity... turtle wax. Of course, none of these waxes are particularly mind blowing to anybody who knows their waxes. The tech wax is the best performing one and is quite well regarded for a cheaper store bought wax. But, that's what I have. The interesting thing is that most of my prototype waxes that I would consider a "dud", still perform better than any of these waxes!!!! (well, except for the water emulsifications that didn't homogenize).... So, I guess I'm on the right track.

The cost?... TBD... I think I can undercut some of the smaller boutique wax companies and still make a decent profit but it's hard to say at this point. Buying in bulk is the key to lowering the price point for these larger companies but that's not quite possible for the smaller guy. Typical pricing for these boutique wax companies is usually $60-$100 for about a 7-8 oz container. But I'm not sure at this point if I can compete with them because I've never bought a Dodo Juice, Bouncer's, etc... product. I'd like to charge a lot less if I can get away with it. I'm used to being poor, so that's ok.

Oh, I do see that Chemical Guys make a flat or satin colored car wash so that might work for you. My food truck was plastidipped and that shit was really tough to take care of. I would have liked to have a product for that when I had it.

Interesting...nice work! Black can certainly be a PIA. I bought some wax a few years ago..have to look up the name of it, but it has been around a long time. It's originally purpose was for lubing wires to pull thru conduits but works well as a wax for cars, boats etc.. It gives a great long lasting shine..I'll have to get back on the product name

Thanks! Well, I guess if I can't get a great formula to work out for me to use as a car wax, I could always sell it as "wire lube wax". LOL

I think you're definitely on the right path to something amazing! I'd consider purchasing some when you've perfected your formula.

Thanks bud! I would consider doing a GB here so you all can get a decent price cut if I do end up with something I'm really happy with.

I just got my cyclomethicone and optiphen in the mail today. I'm starting to get serious now dealing with the chemistry side of things. I'm going to try and make two more batches tonight, I know I will start seeing an improvement in spreadability and feel. I'll be testing for longevity in various ways and looking into labs that can do some testing for me.
