Well, I went and pulled codes with an OBD scanner and got P0730, which basically means the tranny needs to be replaced.

Luckily I found a tranny in my area for this car for $500. If the owner agrees to $500 of the price of car so I can get a tranny I'll pull the motor and tranny out and swap the tranny and rebuild the engine. This will most likely be a summer project with help from the BMW forums.

Anybody ever did a tranny swap on the e39 BMW? LoL

Doesn't seem too bad actually, have to drop the exhaust, heat shield, some brackets, drive shaft, tranny lines and cables, etc. You can drop them out from the bottom pretty easy.
