Default 1989 LS Coupe 5 Speed: CEL 12 problems

Hello, I'm new to this website and glad to have found it. I have a 1989 Legend Coupe with the 5 speed manual and really love it. Since I have had it, however, the CEL 12, EGR, has consistently come on. I replaced my EGR valve with a like new verified functional one and now the light comes on sooner into a drive and is accompanied by some starting issues; often I have to crank it multiple times and give it gas. The idle is also a bit off, but the only CEL is still the egr. I have followed a couple of the simpler tests that the shop manual gives, but was wondering if anyone has any insight into what it could be. I don't believe that the egr pipes or threshold are clogged as I visually checked them and there was no visible buildup. I appreciate any advice.

The EGR shouldn't effect starting or idling, unless maybe it's stuck open. It shouldn't activate until the engine is warmed up, and at a steady cruise.

A faulty coolant temperature sensor (TW Sensor) can cause starting and idling problems.

Thanks for the response! I actually found and solved the starting/idling problem, had an electrical connector disconnected somehow. The problem I currently have is the CEL comes on within 5 minutes of driving.

You can download the service manual from the G1 DIY sticky.

It has a troubleshooting procedure for the EGR.
