G1 coupe 1988 rolls in park
Hi guys, new to the forum. I picked up an 88 g1 coupe that's sat since 2013, i'm the third owner but the original owner bought it new in 89 and parked it before he died and the guy i bought it from towed it a quarter mile from where it sat to his yard and never touched it.
There's only 185.000 km or 115.000 miles on it. Now for my question, the car freewheels in park like it's in neutral, no ticking noise or other noise like from a parking pawl in the trans. Is the park mode electric? I checked the shop manual (thank you to the uploader) and it did indicate it might be something electric as well as something with the cable. (Body/case wire cable joint damaged) Or is that body/case wire cable joint a junction in the shift cable? The engine is seized solid for some reason, but i have another engine i got from a junkyard (the only one i could find here in Sweden). With this low a mileage, you wouldn't think both the engine and the trans are broken, would you? |

According to the Honda service manual; probable causes:
Do you have the Honda service manual to refer to?

Welcome to the Forum!
It seems odd that both the engine and trans would be broken with only 115k miles. It also seems likely that the trans problem would be something minor with the cable, or the pawl. As for the seized engine, have you checked for a broken timing belt? Can you get the transmission that goes with the junkyard engine? -Kennon |

Thank you for the welcome! =) About the engine, the timing belt is still on the front cam gear at least, i'm thinking it's a bearing in the bottom end. The timing belt might have skipped teeth of course. The trans that went with the junkyard engine is long gone, the engine had been in storage at the junkyard since the 90s if the guy i talked to is to be believed. These were rare cars here in Sweden (where we never had Acura, they were called Honda Legend) and rarer still these days. Honda is more of a premium brand over here and premium cars in Sweden in the 80s were mostly Mercedes, BMW, and the upper echelon Volvos and Saabs. |

Bad news... I lifted the car and ATF started coming out. I crawled under the front and lo and behold... A big hole in the transmission just forward of some kind of cable. I'm guessing the trans blew up and is now keeping the engine locked.
The worse news is it's going to be almost impossible to find a transmission =( |

Too bad you are in Europe I have a great automatic transmission available as well as a motor and a lot of other stuff like a super rare Koni strut/shock and Ibach spring full kit and the Koni's are even rebuildable. All from a G1 Coupe here in Los Angeles, California. USA 818-484-eight nine fifty. Jay
