I'm not as knowledgeable as Alex, but it seem to me that one of the biggest items contributing to a BHG is not replacing the radiator PRIOR to having some sort of overheating issue. Any car over 14 years old, should have had at least 1 replacement prior to now.

I guess it would depend on how well it was maintained, but even the best maintained radiators will eventually become partially clogged and lose efficiency and contribute to an overheating situation.

true. the previous owners (an older couple bought it new) took care of her like it was one of there child. they only traded it in for a new tl because of the BHG, if that didn't happen they would of kept it.

I've had to replace radiators in 2 of my other cars (not Acuras), but it was a gradual decline in cooling whereas in traffic you could see the guage start to climb and then if you got back in the open (or turned the heater on), it would go back to normal. Kind of a no-brainer on what to do. Have you ever heard of a Legend owner say that that has happened to them? A gradual temp. climb?:dunno:

I guess an extended preventative maintenance plan for BHG isn't a bad idea. I'm guilty of never changing the rad , but I've never had any issues with overheating, either. I do check the coolant level and I check for leaks at least once a week.
