Ok, I'm confused. I'm not going to replace seals unless they need it. I just spent over an hour searching for "common oil leaks" on the 3.5, or searching for front engine oil leaks.

Results:

None for the front of the engine, other than the Oil Filter. Maybe I'm being overly cautious, but I don't understand how an Oil Filter could spray oil across the entire front of the engine, without getting it to the back area........

Maybe the oil pan is leaking in the front? Only thing about buying a used motor, you have no history. For all you know, the issue could have been fixed but just not cleaned up. :dunno:

If you have the seals why not change them all now instead of having to do it later? (doesn't make sense to me...)

I don't have them yet. I can order them, but tired of waiting on parts.

I resealed where the oil pump meets the block on 2 of my 3 swaps because there was oil sitting on the top of the oil pump/block and it didn't come from above.

You really just gotta get those covers off and see where it's coming from but oil filters (especially the cheap ones) will seep a little where they meet the oil pan and over time that little bit can look like a lot.

You have to decide how far you want to go though. I get kinda OCD in a perfectionist kinda way and need to pull in the reinforcements to help me just "let it go".

Honestly, if I had the money and time I would be tearing the whole engine apart, replacing every seal and everything else. Just like I have done at least a dozen times before on Domestic engines.

But these engines are different and that leaves me a little leary, which is why I ask questions.

That is good information about the oil pump. All of the front seals are only $25.00 so I might as well do them.

I don't want problems after I put this in and I sure as hell don't want to have to tear the entire front end of the engine apart again.

Doesn't have to be common in order to leak. Front main seals, oil pumps, oil pans, they leak on any car.

I'm just replacing them, not worth the risk.

Anyways I started removing the wiring/vacuum harness from the RL today. And got the check I needed to order all the parts. So, if everything goes well, car will be together by Christmas.

Feel your pain, low budget and needed swap = choosing your battles. I think I'm at the same stage you are, starting the 3.5 teardown tomorrow .

Uh, my budget went over $2k....... But I'm also doing my steering rack.

Before you go spending $2k you need to realize I am replacing every seal on the engine except the head gaskets. I'm replacing all differential seals and set rings, all engine seals except the head gaskets, input/output seals on the transmission, all hoses, heater valve assembly, resealing the oil pan, etc...

This list is complete of all the parts purchased/soon to be purchased "EXCEPT" the mount. There will be nothing left to purchase at this point.

This does not include seperate parts like the Steering rack and related parts, the Driveshaft boot or the ball joints. This is only things I'm doing to the engine itself and to get the engine up and running correctly. You may not have to worry about your mounts, I did. You also can spend less on the HG set than I did.
