| Fred Clark | How do I increase RPM's at the TACH

So I was told I should be idling between 1500-1700 rpm initially upon starting car and then it should drop down to about 800rpm. Assuming this is correct, what can I do to increase rpms since my idle is more like 1200-1400 and then it drops down to zero. (my tach line literally sits at the zero mark, but the car maintains it's idle (nice and quiet). Is it simply a matter of turning idle adjustment screw clockwise (thereby decreasing the amount of air in port, aka "leaning out the mixture" at the idle adjustment port? Thanks

Im not exactly sure what you're asking Are you trying to increase what the tach says or the idle itself?

| Fred Clark | sorry, MY BAD for the confusion...........

I am trying to increase idle speed itself.

The purpose of that initial 1500-ish idle speed is to warm up the engine before driving. You live in Florida, which is warm to begin with, so your engine doesn't need a lot of warming up initially. On a very cold, snowy day, you would see those higher idle speeds you're looking for.

When your G1 is warmed up, the needle sits at zero? Sounds like you need to replace the tach. Unless you did something to cluster, you can adjust the needle by hand so it actually is on it correctly. When the engine is off, is the needle passed the zero mark?

When the engine is off, the needle is in its cradle at zero. The tach is not the problem. i AM TRYING TO INCREASE IDLE SPEED, DO i JUST ADJUST IDLE SCREW?

| Fred Clark | YES, my idle is higher when it is cold Quote:
I travel alot in cold climates and my vehicle always starts and runs better in cold.

NOTE: Draw a straight line across the distributor and where it's mounted from - as a reference point if you may, use a sharpie!

Ah, sorry my brain farted from not reading it properly. To make the idle higher, you need to move the idle adjusting screw on the throttle body. Be careful because the yellow light on the ECU will light up if you adjust it too high. And what Ferj said too, since you have a 2.5L, you can adjust the timing on the distributor, unlike the 2.7L, which is hidden inside the vacuum box on the driverside firewall.

As the others say, rotating the idle screw counterclockwise will increase the idle. However it is my experience that it will not adjust the idle as much as you need it to. Something else is wrong here in my opinion. In terms of idling the EAICV controls everything, if it is faulty in any way it could cause a low idle, stalling excessive idle etc. 1200 is a bit low but nothing to be concerned about when it is first started. I have 6 G1's and they are all a bit different, most are around 1500 but one is more like 1200 so don't worry about it. As long as the idle is high when you start it and comes down then the Fast Idle Valve (FIV) is working. Have you cheked for vacuum leaks yet? Grab a can of throttle body cleaner and spray it around all of the vacuum lines, if the RPM changes then you've found a leaking vacuum hose. Also, double check that there are no codes on the ECU. YOu should get one red blink when your turn the ignition to II and then codes will follow if there are any.
