Car kept shutting off until...

So I drove to the grocery store to pick up a few things. On the way there, I noticed a slight hiccup on the tach, but didn't really give it much thought.

I get out of the grocery store, put on the stereo face, and try to start the car. It started, but in half a second it turned off. It kept doing this at least 5 times. Also, when I turn the key to accessory mode, none of the dash lights would come on. The windows worked, if that is important.

So for some reason, I decide to take off the stereo face (car was still in accessory mode) and all of a sudden all the dash lights came on. I tried to start the car and it worked just fine. Needless to say I drove home without the stereo face on. When I got home, I put the stereo back on to see if it would start, and it did. *shrugs*

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before? Fuse? Relay?

I'm going to say it sounds like your ignition switch.

If that is what it is, do you think it is unsafe to drive? My brother has been borrowing the car during the day - I don't want it to cut out on him while he's on the freeway or anything...

Does sound like the ign switch but kinda weird it stopped doing it with the radio faceplate removed.

That was my thought - but it seems like everything else points to the ignition switch. I'll take it to my mechanic. He will diagnose the car for free for the first hour. He's never misdiagnosed anything on my car.
